New $2 Million Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration Training Facility Opens in Virginia

Industrial Refrigeration Technical College (IRTC), a high-tech, industrial ammonia training facility, has opened in Lyndhurst, Virginia, just east of Waynesboro, There are very few such training facilities in the United States, and the $2 million anhydrous ammonia operator training facility is set to be one of the top ammonia refrigeration education facilities in the nation. “We are very excited to offer this exceptional opportunity to train ammonia operators,” said Chris Shackelford, Technical Support Service Manager, IRTC. “These classes are taught by instructors with over 40 years of combined experience and will help facilities run as efficiently and safely as possible.” Industrial Refrigeration Technical College offers ammonia operator training and instruction in a classroom environment and hands-on training in their state-of-the-art, comprehensive ammonia refrigeration lab. IRTC also serves as a RETA-certified test-taking center. The ammonia operator training lab features multiple refrigeration systems; ammonia detectors and detection systems; thermosyphon oil cooling; liquid recirculators; canned pumps and open drive pumps; flooded systems; bookstep compressing; economized screw compressors; auto purgers; water treatment; emergency let down stations; blast freezers, VFD-controlled screw compressors, condensers, and evaporators; and a PLC-controlled supervisory system with HMI graphic interface. The ammonia refrigeration training facility has been designed to simulate a variety of various training scenarios and gives students the ability to apply their classroom education into "real-world" trouble-shooting situations. IRTC classroom courses focus on process safety, operation, and maintenance, as well as technical issues, sustainability, and energy-saving solutions for industrial ammonia refrigeration facilities.
